Public Education How 9-1-1 Works When 9-1-1 is dialed, the telephone call is transmitted over dedicated telephone lines to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP/911 Center) assigned to the city or area you are calling from. This provides direct access to police, fire or emergency medical responders in the event of an emergency situation. What is Enhanced 9-1-1? Enhanced 9-1-1 automatically displays the calling party's name, telephone number and location on a computer screen in the 9-1-1 Communications Center. Enhanced 9-1-1 tremendously increases the lifesaving potential of emergency response, especially when the calling party is unable to provide location information. 9-1-1 and Wireless (Cell) Phones Although 9-1-1 Communications Centers and Wireless (Cellular) Carriers are working towards Enhanced 9-1-1 capabilities for wireless (cell) phones users, caller still need to be prepared to (1) identify yourself as a wireless caller; (2) provide your wireless phone number; (3) the exact location where help is needed (Cross streets, mileposts, landmarks) If your 9-1-1 call is disconnected, dial 9-1-1 again. For more information about Wireless E911 Coverage in the State of Washington, CLICK HERE. Check your phone to see if it is pre-programmed to dial 9-1-1 with one button. If so, handle your phone carefully to prevent the automatic misdialing of 9-1-1. A good idea is to use the "key lock" feature to prevent misdialing of 9-1-1. Know When to Call! *****TO STOP A CRIME*****TO SAVE A LIFE*****TO REPORT A FIRE Determine whether or not you have a true emergency. Do you need IMMEDIATE emergency response from police, a fire department or emergency medical services? Is your situation critical? Is the situation going on now or has it just happened?? Do not call 9-1-1 for information but wait until you can look up the appropriate number in a phone book. Parents, teach your children how to use any phone (including cell phones) to dial 9-1-1. Calling 9-1-1 Be prepared to: 1. State the nature of the emergency: Do you need an emergency response from law enforcement, fire department or emergency medical services? 2. Stay calm and answer all the questions asked by the 9-1-1 Dispatcher. Do not hang up unless you are told to do so. Cellular callers need to keep the power on to your cell phone in case the 9-1-1 center needs to call you back. 3. Limited English Proficiency (LEP): Persons with limited English speaking abilities must be prepared to have their telephone placed on "hold" while the 9-1-1 Dispatcher is able to contact Language Line Services for an appropriate interpreter. Do not hang up! Be patient until the 9-1-1 Dispatcher can connect you to the Language Line operator. MACC's Public Education Team
